CMIQ Disciplined Earnings Growth Portfolio
Stock markets are full of volatility. At Capital Markets IQ (“CMIQ”), we are always seeking out managers who understand this, and find an edge. Several years ago, we met Robert Schreiber, who has a 15-year history of outperforming the market. He has been working his wizardry with us since 2011.
Mr. Schreiber has 25 years of experience in the financial markets at giants such as UBS and Morgan Stanley, with a focus on retirement planning. Years ago, he developed a cyclical strategy that he calls the Disciplined Equity Growth Portfolio (“DEGP”). DEGP is a proprietary portfolio model built and managed by Schreiber. It takes into account several factors (see strategy profile on right).
He uses a time-tested approach that includes three major factors related to stock movement: market covariance; industry cycle analysis; and individual investment factors including market leadership. These factors are calculated and analyzed across major equity investment types. This has led to a predictive model that has historically outperformed the S&P 500 in a blended portfolio of large cap stocks, plus ETFs, and select mid-cap stocks.
In order to pick the best stocks, he calculates target prices as a function of expected EPS, expected sales, and expected growth rates. Only investments with a potential capital appreciation of greater than 30% are monitored for possible inclusion in the portfolio. He then monitors analyst’s opinions, and only selects those with rising expectations, mostly from companies representing the next phase of the economic cycle. DEGP uses ETFs for exposure to the global market, and to industries where there is no clear market leadership.
